Privacy Policy
Real Food · Last updated: September 27, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Real Food mobile app ("Real Food", "the app", "we", "us") handles your information. Real Food helps you understand how foods may affect your skin, appearance and wellbeing by scanning products with your camera and showing a score.
The short version: Real Food has no login and no user accounts. We don't sell your data. Photos you take are sent for analysis and are not stored on our servers afterwards. Most of your data stays on your device.
1. Who we are
The app is operated by Balthasar Beyer, Germany. For any privacy question, contact us at balthasarbeyer@gmail.com.
2. Data we process
| What | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Photos of food/products you scan | To analyze the product and generate a score | Sent to our processing backend (Supabase Edge Function), which forwards the image to Google's Gemini AI for analysis. The image is processed in real time and is not stored by us after the score is returned. |
| Onboarding answers (e.g. goals, skin concerns, height, weight, age range) | To personalize your scores and plan | Stored on your device, and may be stored in our backend (Supabase) to power the app's features. |
| Scan history, habits, streaks, settings | To run app features (history, tracking, reminders) | Stored locally on your device. |
| Purchase & subscription status | To unlock Pro features and manage your subscription | Handled by RevenueCat and Apple. We receive your subscription status tied to an anonymous app user ID, not your name. |
| Usage & diagnostic analytics (e.g. screens viewed, taps, crashes) | To understand how the app is used and fix problems | Processed by PostHog using an anonymous identifier. |
3. What we do NOT collect
- No account, no email, no password — the app works without you signing in.
- No name or contact details, unless you type a display name (which stays on your device).
- No precise location.
- We do not sell or rent your personal data to anyone.
4. Camera
Real Food asks for camera permission so you can scan products. The camera is only active on the scan screen. A captured photo is resized and sent for analysis to produce your score, then discarded by our backend. You can revoke camera access anytime in your iOS Settings.
5. Service providers
We rely on the following providers, who process data only to deliver the app:
- Supabase — backend and image-analysis proxy. supabase.com/privacy
- Google (Gemini AI) — analyzes the scanned image to generate a score. ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms
- RevenueCat — subscription management. revenuecat.com/privacy
- Apple — processes your purchase via the App Store. apple.com/legal/privacy
- PostHog — anonymous product analytics. posthog.com/privacy
6. Legal basis (GDPR)
If you are in the EU/EEA, we process your data based on your consent (camera, analytics), the performance of our service to you (delivering scores, managing your subscription), and our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and secure. You can withdraw consent at any time by disabling the relevant permission or stopping use of the app.
7. Data retention
Scanned photos are not retained after analysis. Data stored on your device remains until you delete it or uninstall the app — you can clear it anytime via the app's "Delete my data" option in Settings. Subscription records are kept by Apple and RevenueCat as required for billing.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your data, and to object to certain processing. Because the app is account-free, most of your data lives on your device and you control it directly. For anything held in our backend, email balthasarbeyer@gmail.com and we will respond.
9. Children
Real Food is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where required by local law). We do not knowingly collect data from children below that age.
10. Health note
Real Food is a wellness and educational tool, not a medical device. Scores and food information are estimates generated by AI and should not be treated as medical, nutritional, or dermatological advice. See our Terms of Use.
11. Android waitlist (clearfood.app)
If you join the Android waitlist on our website, we store your email address, the time and wording of your consent, the language setting of your browser, your browser's user-agent string, the invite code you received or sent (if any), the goals you picked in the website preview (if any) and a one-way hash of your IP address that we use only to block automated sign-ups. The data is stored with Supabase in the EU.
We use it for one purpose: to email you when Clear Food is available on Android and to give you the promised launch perk. We do not sell it, share it for advertising or send you other marketing. Legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time by replying to any of our emails or writing to balthasarbeyer@gmail.com. We delete the waitlist entry once the launch email has been sent and the perk period has ended, or immediately when you withdraw consent.
12. Changes
We may update this policy as the app evolves. The "Last updated" date above reflects the latest version.
